1 out of 5 stars What a load of rubbish....   July 27, 2010
Maria (Wales, UK)
After the disaster called 'Nightfall' I don't know what possessed me to read 'Shadow souls'... Maybe I was hoping for a miracle. Obviously this didn't happen... It's such a shame because I loved the first books so much, it's hard to believe they were written by the same author who wrote these last 2 books.

So in Shadow souls Elena and friends are in Dark Dimension trying to save Stefan from prison. Nothing really happens there except for couple of parties and (whippings!). After what felt like pages and pages of describing Elenas and friends multiple dresses (blaa blaa) they then rescue Stefan. The end. See, no need to read the book I just literally told the story. Oh I forgot to mention this flower girl (huh?) who turns into an owl (another huh?) or something that attacks them all. That was the great action bit. Seriously by then I was skipping pages as couldn't be bothered anymore.

Maybe its because I read all six books in one go, but by the time i got to book 6 it seemed to be drawn out.

I enjoyed them thoroughly and cannot wait to read the last installment when it is out.

5 out of 5 stars The Vampire Diaries, The Return; Shadow Souls   July 11, 2010
Nieve (Some where in a book)
I read the whole series of vampire diaries in a small amount of time, after getting into the TV series, which is completely different to the book series but brilliant all the same.

I thought this book was amazing and I really couldn't put it down until I had finished it, you get a real insight into Damons way of thinking, and as he is one of my favourite characters that was a big plus for me.

This book takes you into a whole new world, literally as a lot of it is set in a different dimension, we get to meet loads of fantastic new characters but without leaving the old ones behind.

I don't want to go on because I'll end up telling half the story I'll just say that it's well worth the read and will leave you desperate for more, thats how I felt at least.

It was a present, but i think the recipient enjoyed the read.

She (what a surprise it was a female) enjoyed the other vampire diaries too.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire Diaries - (The Return) Shadow Souls   June 29, 2010

The new 'Vampire Diaries' books (know as the Return) are different to the originals. They have more magic and myth in, and the plots are action packed. However I do think that the author manages to contain it all, without in getting too out of hand. How ever I would not describe this as a 'easy read', due to the fact there are many names and new faces are brought into this, the second book, 'Shadow Souls'.

If for you the main pull of this series is the love triangle between Elena and the two vampire brothers Damon and Stephan Salvatore then I would recommend the new books 'Nightfall' and 'Shadow Souls'. The new title yet to be released is to be named 'Midnight'.

So, at the end of the fist of the new books 'Midnight', we left Stephan imprisoned after being tricked by thinking he would become human if he went there ; Elena and Damon are on the way to the Dark Dimension to rescue him ; Matt is being acussed by Caroline that he assaulted her, and she is now pregnet, the police are after him so ; Elena asks him to go with her and Damon to find Stephan.

We find Elena, Damon and Matt on a road trip together, needless to say the two boys are not getting along. Elena is struggling to understand her feelings for Damon, and her desperate need to find Stephan before he can come to much more harm. Bonnie and Meredith are still at home, trying to find out what is wrong with Caroline, ans seeing of they can help her. That is where we find them all at the start of the book. From here in escualtes pretty quickly, not only with Damon and Elena, but with them all.

The story it's self is packed with, as stated above, lots of magic and myth, so open imagination needed! As outers previously had said, the author has crammed it full of idea's although I don't think that this is nessesearly a bad thing, however at some points you do get the feeling you want to flick back and say 'Sorry, who are you?' and sometimes just 'What on earth is going on now?!'.

Wow, the ending was very, very un-expected as I'm sure it was for all who have read the book. The ending is undoutebly a cliff hanger that will have you sitting and waiting for the last book to be realised!! Not only is there many deap secrets about them all only Shinichi knows, but the bombshell at the end is deffinatly the biggest surprise.

So over all, much more complicated than the originals, but the story thickens very well between Damon and Elena, and, as in the previous book, we see a much more vunrable part of Damon. This confused Elena and you can feel her confusion about her feeling for Damon, yet at the same time her heartbreak of what Stephan is going through, and also we see the three girls strong unbreakable friendship once again

Hope that you enjoyed my first review, and sorry for any mistakes!

Happy Reading :)
