Very quite running. August 11, 2010 Padraiglf This is very quite while running. I bought this because it was a Western Digital. Have no problems with it at all. Also like the rubber slieves at the ends which can be removed. It gives it a sense of safety and does not slide around easily.
Tough as a Military commando! June 5, 2010 Jon Lucas (Chippenham, UK) I must admit that usually I'm more careful with my things but unfortunately this hard drive has definitely got the rough end of the deal!
This hard drive has been dropped numerous times, had large quantities of alcohol spilt on it, been attacked by a chewing Hamster(don't ask) and still works as well as the day I got it.
A very reliable piece of kit, whippet fast and easy to set-up!
Excelent realy fast delivery..................... May 3, 2010 Mr. R. K. Urs The product is excelent and the service was realy quick..... But the hard disk has some squeeking noice...............
Great storage at a great price April 9, 2010 Mr. Marius M. Jennings (UK) I really love my external storage drive. Its ideal for storing data if one has limited laptop storage space. A break back up tool at a very reasonable price
Windows Vista compatibility issues March 31, 2010 M. Harfield (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Think carefully before buying if you use Windows Vista. I bought this drive as a backup for my main PC. That was running XP and everything worked fine. I was very pleased with what is a great little unit - it runs fast and quiet. I have now upgrade to a new Vista machine and real issues have kicked in. This is despite the fact that WD claim this drive is Vista compatible.
Windows frequently cannot see the drive. You get the 'You need to install drivers for an unknown device' error. If you then run the diagnostic windows tells you it is a WD Elements drive and you should install drivers. The thing is WD don't have drivers, they use the Windows generic ones. Nor will you find drivers on the web. I have tried the likes of Driver Doctor etc with no joy.
I phoned WD customer support in the US (30 mins international call) and all they could do was get me to uninstall the generic drivers and reinstall them. This did nothing.
Their support desk then claimed to be unaware of any compatibility issues with Vista. This strikes me as unbelievable. To check this out put 'Western Digital Vista problem' into Google. You will get several screens of blog entries where loads of people have hit this issue and none have found a way round it.
I left the drive connected and one day Windows could see it again. I immediately dumped everything from it onto the PC and so got my data back but I cannot rely on it, the next day 'Unknown device' came up again.
This drive was working fine and I really liked it (hence the 2 star rating rather than 1 star). I am keeping it in the hope that an upgrade to Windows 7 will solve the problem but I will never fully trust it again and am buying another manufacturuer's external drive for my main back up. If you are running Vista I am afraid you should look for a different manufacturer. Sorry.
