Product Description

Introducing the Eighth Wonder of travel books. A joyous, passionate gift book for travelers-both the real and the armchair variety-1,000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE delivers exactly the promise of its an around-the-world, continent-by-continent listing of places guaranteed to give you shivers, the unique and wonderful places you must see on and off the beaten track.

Take a safari into Botswana's Okavango Delta, the world's largest oasis, where "if you see 10 percent of what sees you, it's an exceptional day." Sail the Grenadines, 32 islands and hundreds of dotlike cays strung like a necklace of gems across 40 miles of pristine waters. Tour the covered souks of Aleppo, where the labyrinthine streets seem straight out of A Thousand and One Nights and frankincense and myrhh are still sold. Hike the Tasman Glacier. Climb the Tuscan hills to San Gimignano. Stay at the Hassler in Rome, or Paris's Crillon-you must, at least once. There's Canyon de Chelly, Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market, the backwaters of Kerala, Ipanema beach, the Buddhas of Borobudur, Mesa Verde's cave dwellings, the Oaxaca Saturday market, Ballybunion Golf Club.

The prose is gorgeous, seizing on exactly what makes each entry worthy of inclusion. And, following the romance, the nuts and bolts: addresses, phone and fax numbers, web sites, costs, best times to visit. Of special interest are subject-specific indexes-gorgeous beaches, destination restaurants, world-class museums-making the guide entirely user-friendly, no matter if you're dreaming or going.

Interesting but

Review Date: February 21, 2010
Reviewer: C. Schlag, Aiken, ,SC, USA
This book is very interesting and provides a good description of many worthwhile places to visit. However, the black and white photographs do not do the places justice, and while many of the selected places sound interesting some appear to have been selected as much for their price as location. I looked at the New Zealand recommendations in particular as I've been planning a trip there for the past few months, and while one of the three North Island locations the author selected was rated by the locals as a "must do", there were a host of other places - like the Kauri forests - which are equal to or greater than the other two. Excellent book to begin research, but not necessarily my idea of an all-inclusive "Best of the Best" to see before you die.

Carpe diam, what else do i have to say. This book is an excellent origin from which to decide: To what will I allocate my ephemeral time on earth.
too Many Four Seasons

Review Date: January 9, 2010
Reviewer: Clio G, Sacramento, CA
Though I am enjoying this book, I find there are a bit too many references to the Four Seasons Hotels as places to see before you die. While they are all truly lovely places to stay (if you can afford them), their place as a top destination to visit before you die is a bit suspect. I think of historical places, places of natural beauty, and entertainment spots as places not to be missed. Lux hotels will come and go and 50 years from now no one may know what a Four Seasons is, but hopefully the Grand Canyon will still be there.
Decent book...but poorly done digital version

Review Date: December 25, 2009
Reviewer: Socki, Kauai, HI
The book itself is pretty decent. It is not a replacement for a true travel book, but it will give you an idea on some of the top spots to see in any particular location. I personally like to browse through it for potential "can't miss" items which can be easily overlooked. So i use to have the book in its print form but didn't bring it with me when i moved as its a pretty hefty book to lug around when you're trying to keep size and weight of baggage down. But recently i noticed that it was available for Kindle, and so i figured I'd pick it up.

I'm not sure if i could be more disappointed quite honestly. I love the kindle, and generally enjoy this book. The problem is that the organization and navigation of the contents was not designed for the digital form. For example, if you decide you want to travel to hawaii, your only option is to go to the table of contents, click on 'United States and Canada' then go page by page through all other 'Places' until you reach locations in hawaii. There is no index available either to make locating places easy. Basically, unless you plan to read the book as you would any novel, the Kindle version is sort of painful to use.

Book Description
Margo Jefferson’s On Michael Jackson is a lucid and elegant cultural analysis of the rise and fall of the King of Pop.

An award-winning cultural critic, Jefferson brings an unexpected compassion as well as her sharp intellect and incomparable insight to Jackson’s 2005 trial for child molestation, startling us with her erudite illumination of a media-drenched circus that we only thought we understood. As only she can, Jefferson reads between the lines of Jackson’s 1998 autobiography as well as published accounts of his childhood, his family, and Motown--where Michael and his brothers first made the Jackson 5 a household name--leaving us with provocative and perhaps unanswerable questions about Jackson, child stardom, and fame itself.

Margo Jefferson on the Life and Death of Michael Jackson

Pundits love to talk about the crises and cultural flashpoints that give Americans the chance to grow up and think outside of the usual dualities: this is good, that is evil; we hate her, we love him. Michael Jackson’s death gives us yet another chance.

Talent, scandal, sudden death, and a 24/7 media cycle make us very worshipful or very cynical. We can do better this time around. We don’t have to sneer or be pious. We know Michael Jackson was a genius, and we know he became a tortured soul. The first three days after his death were our grace period. We watched videos, replayed our favorite songs relived our youth, and waxed nostalgia about the good old days when all we had to deal with was his enormous talent. And though I never much liked the song, "we" were definitely the world--crowding onto streets, into theaters and parks, dancing (or at least swaying) to his music. North and South America. Europe. Africa. Asia. Only Antarctica and most of the animal kingdom stayed uninvolved.

Then the nasty stuff started creeping out again, like the ghouls in Thriller. Drug reports, rumors of custody wars, tours of an empty Neverland, memorial extravaganza plans; the sight of Michael’s father hustling family unity along with his new record company; the statements and counter-statements of siblings, lawyers, ex-employees, companions and bottom-feeders. And, of course, the three children. Whatever we don’t know about them, we do know they’re worth their weight in gold records and posthumous business deals. And it’s only just begun.

But we can live with the damaged life and the great work: both of them, all at once. We have to. So much of Michael Jackson’s damage reflects the worst in our culture, and so much of his talent reflects the best.--Margo Jefferson

Product Description

The 2CD The Essential Michael Jackson takes you on a journey from budding star, to iconic legend and allows you to immerse yourself in the musical and emotional development of each track defining the story of a global superstar.

Michael Jackson needs no introduction, as part of the Jackson 5 he helped make up a remarkable musical family and one of the biggest pop phenomenons of the early 70s. The Jacksons' infectious brand of funky soul and now iconic stage presence reached out globally and made them and Michael international stars.

As the success of the band grew, Michael branched out with his own solo career first launching with "Got to be There" and then "Rockin' Robin". The momentum started to grow with the release of more successful singles and, as the hype surrounding the Jackson 5 slowed down towards the late 70s, Michael continued to develop and grow as an artist. With the release of Off the Wall, an immaculately crafted set of funky disco-pop, smooth soul, and lush, sentimental pop ballads, Michael cemented his place as a global star. The 1980s were a career-defining period with his instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power Michael Jackson was unstoppable. The 1982 album Thriller became the biggest selling album of all time and combined his musical genius with an exceptional and ahead of its time music video epic. Bad (1987) was released with enormous public anticipation and spawned another succession of hit singles with "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Man in the Mirror."
