Want to turn your home PC into a complete Recording studio to record, edit, and play back digital audio files, this article, describes how and what you need do it.

Do you possess a multimedia PC with a sound card and speaker? All you require is an inexpensive recording and editing software to your PC, with this you can produce high-quality, effective voice and music recordings. The basic prerequisite to get a level of recording are a PC, Quiet recording space, Microphone, Speakers and headphones, recording software.

Our aim is to record a clear, close voice track, so we need a Quiet recording space, which means keeping noise and the sound of the room out of the reach till the finished recording meets all our needs. Professional’s records in closet specially designed to keep noises out and make their voice sound good.

To get your voice or recordings into the computer, you need a microphone. Don’t relay on the dull one that you got with your computer. Choose high-quality, inexpensive Microphone that sounds far better. Microphones are available from music or audio equipment suppliers. There are microphones for the basic voice work. Choose the microphone that best suits for female voice and male voice.

Choosing of computer speakers tends to be given importance because it impacts on getting quality output of recording. Computer speakers are adequate for recording, editing, and finishing basic recordings, but empower some decent powered speakers to get better quality output.

The net result you get in recording apparently depends on the Recording software that is being used. Choose recording software equipped with all editing features such as with best bit rate, creating special effects adding music and/or sound effects and the software should present your recordings in the formats you desire. The music software that best suits for professionals as well as beginners are FlexiMusic’s FlexiMusic Wave Editor, a software for recording and editing.

Part 1: Getting Started

Fasten up your equipment by plugging your microphone into your sound card’s microphone. Be careful in this, since there are three plugs there, choose the one that Is written as “Mic”. Now launch the software that controls the sound card’s recording source (for this you can use the “Recording source” command in FlexiMusic Wave Editor). Then select your recording source (Mic) and adjust its volume at 100%.

Start your recording program (say FlexiMusic Wave Editor), choose stereo, bit rates of 16 bits, 44kHz of sampling rate and at CD-quality. Start the recording command. Adjust the volume so that Digital level meters shows 3/4th volume, if it exceeds it will sound horribly distorted.

To improve the sound of your recordings, get closer to the mic. The farther away you are from it, the more you pick up the room noise around you. Get closer and your voice is closer. Advantage of getting closer to microphone may bring out the lower frequencies in your voice and can make you sound more powerful. Obviously, locate your recording area away from noisy equipment. Some precautionary things that are to be taken care are, put a little distance between the mic and the noise source. Avoid salty foods immediately before your recording session. Have some water nearby and apply a little lip balm. These will keep your mouth and lips lubricated. When you’re ready to record, speak clearly and slowly. You can always tense up your recording while editing. If an error occurs go back to the nearest sentence start and continue on again.

Part 2: Editing the recordings

“As haste makes waste”, don’t fix everything in one take. Record as many times as needed and assemble the best parts into the final recording. Calculate whether the recording done has everything that you desired. If not, don’t pamper, go back and re-record the bits you need, listen again, and repeat the process until you obtain the desired. You see a two-dimensional representation of the words as sound waveforms. You can hear the words as you play them. Cut, copy, paste is all the techniques you apply when editing sound.

Early to begin editing, make sure to turn off the mic, disconnect the headphones, and switch off speakers. Delete the unnecessary things that interrupt the output of the recording. Eliminate the junk and move further improving your performance. Never give up to until you get the best result of recording. Do carry out as many takes as needed, find the best takes out of it and build your final version from them.

Make sure of any changes you have done during editing. Analyze, if you can make it better. Check whether the volume is consistent? Are there any noises, background sounds, or other unwanted junk parts that which can be eliminated or reduce?

After editing the voice, to make it efficient better you can add music or sound effects to enhance the final version. You add the back ground effect using the same software FlexiMusic Wave Editor, open the music file in audio software, select, and copy it to the clipboard. If needed trim the music to match the length of your voice recording, then, place the cursor at the start of your voice recording, and select Edit > Paste Mix. Make sure that you can hear your voice recording clearly with the music playing in the background.

Now make the best use of your audio software’s to maximize the recording’s volume. Next, choose a format in which you want your recordings to be such as, Mp3, WMA, Snd, Raw, and Au. Select the recording which is in the waveform and save the file to the audio format of your choice. Using mp3 or WMA files is useful to save space on your hard drive while retaining reasonably good quality and for transmitting your work over the Internet.

Finally you have done! You can play back the file in FlexiMusic Wave Editor, or with any audio program, such as Windows Media Player or Winamp, and transliterate the recording.

Having your own home recording studio is one of the biggest advantages you can provide for yourself as a musician.  In this 7 part report on setting up your own home recording studio, we are discussing the necessary recording equipment and software that your home recording studio will need.   As we arrive at Day 6,  it is time to discuss the editing software you will need to make your recorded music sound its best.

As we have discussed in previous sections, technology has made modern music possible and opened the door for home recording studios.  From freeware to expensive software suites, the editing software available to home recording engineers gives us the ability to deliver a professional quality recording from the comfort of the home recording studio.

While the huge menu of freeware applications available today may encompass every option you might need, you may eventually reach a point where you want options that are not available from freeware.  If you find your home recording studios needs have taken you further than your current editing software is willing to go, looking at the other available options may be necessary to achieve the professional sound studio effect you are looking for.

In your search for editing software, doing your research can be an important factor in finding an editing program that you can be satisfied with.   The various options you may want to look for are:

File Formats -  Does the editing program you are considering offer the ability to edit files of different formats like wav,mpeg,mp3 and others?  This can be important because any time a file is converted to a new format, it can lose quality.  You want to minimize quality losses by insuring that your editing software can work with any file type you throw at it.

GUI -  The Graphical User Interface is where you can see the interactions you are making with the software.   Like the keyboard of your computer, you can see the available functions, even though the software will be carrying out these functions behind the scenes in a language of bits and bytes.   Choosing the editing software that offers an easy to understand GUI will greatly simplify the process of creating the perfect recording.

Features -  Software is only useful when it has the features you need and editing software is no exception.  Does the editing software offer a timeline option and a visual field so you can make precise cuts when and where you need them?  Does it offer mixing board features, such as panning sounds?  How about beat making capabilities?  If you are using freeware, feel free to try a few titles but if you are going to spend money on a paid software suite, make sure you get professional editing software that offers all of the features you may need or want  in the future and upgrade abilities so you aren’t spending hundreds of dollars on dust collectors.

As we reach the last section of our seven part discussion, we will be discussing the final, and perhaps most important part of your home studio, getting your sound from the recording room to a format the general public can use.

Building a Home Recording Studio

“How do I soundproof my garage, basement, or a bedroom in my single family house or condo so my 4 piece rock band can practice and record and not bother the neighbors?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked this question, I would be in the Bahamas right now, instead of writing this article. Many factors need to be considered prior to beginning your studio or practice room-soundproofing project. Some of the questions you should be asking yourself are: What type of amplification will the band be using, are the drums going to be acoustic and miked or are they digital. Are you going to be recording live late at night or are we going to be doing “line in” recording only? These questions and many more need to be considered before the actual construction begins. If live recording and rehearsal are the plan, then maximum soundproofing will be needed.

The most effective way to soundproof a garage, basement, or bedroom is to actually construct a room within a room (go to www.auralex.com) and download the free booklet “Acoustics 101″, this is a wonderful resource for the home studio builder. Their ideas are solid and applicable to any studio soundproofing project. The room within a room concept utilizes the sealed dead air space that is captured between the inner walls and the outer walls to help greatly with the soundproofing endeavor. It is probably easiest to frame the walls on the floor and then tilt them up into place thus making dry walling the outside of the walls much easier. It is also highly recommended that another ceiling be joisted out for the room within a room, however, this is often times not possible due to space constraints.

In this case, the existing ceiling and ceiling joists may be used as the ultimate ceiling for the studio, provided that it is adequately soundproofed with materials such as the mass loaded vinyl or a combination of closed cell foam mat and MLV. I will elaborate on these materials, as we get further into this article. Once the walls are framed out and the right amount of “Dead air space” is determined, then it is time to install the soundproofing. The first order of business is to consider what needs to be done to the wall cavities prior to installing a barrier and finally the wallboard. I like to line the inside cavities with a closed cell vinyl nitrile foam mat such as American Mat. This mat (generally 1/4″ thickness) is adhered to the inside cavity walls as well as the studs and joists using a contact cement to adhere the mat. Keep in mind that the American Mat is used to line the cavities only, not to fill the cavity.

If thermal insulation is needed, use products such as rock wool, mineral wool, cut wool fibers, or my favorite, Roxul. Roxul is a great thermal rock wool based batt type insulation that has great soundproofing qualities. If thermal insulation is a requirement for the practice room or studio, then Roxul is the way to go.

Now we come to a crossroads, it is time to determine if decoupling the walls using resilient channels or American Sound clips is a necessity. De coupling is used when impact transmission or low frequency noise is a factor. Impact would come primarily from the drums (acoustic type) or the bass amplifier.

However, if the band is using Marshall high powered amps (50 watt amps with 4 X 12 cabinets for example) along with miked acoustic drums and an Ampeg bass system, then decoupling will most likely be necessary. These methods and procedures will be explained in later articles. If decoupling were determined to be unnecessary, then the next step would be to find a good barrier material such as American mass loaded vinyl (which is a high grade mass loaded vinyl barrier). This barrier could be stapled directly to the studwork on a wall assembly or directly to the joists. This is a method that is used if cost or space constraints are factors. If the barrier material is to be stapled directly to the stud or joist framing then it is best that the seams be over lapped, caulked (using OSI acoustical caulking compound) and then taped with either a lead tape or a heavy-duty PVC seam tape. Once the Mass Loaded vinyl (MLV) is installed and sealed, it is time to install the final layer of drywall. I always recommend using 5/8″ drywall as the final layer because of its mass and its sound blocking abilities. . It is always advisable to butter the edges of the last layer of drywall with acoustical caulk. You want to grab every STC (sound transmission class) point you can when trying to make your new studio as soundproof as possible. Finally you will tape mud and paint your final layer of drywall. Now you have a great soundproof home recording studio.

We will discuss acoustical treatments for your studio in subsequent articles, but for now you are well on your way to having a professional grade recording studio in your home.

Cheap Home Backup Server 1.28TB & Counting

UPDATE: It is no more, I have replaced this with 2x 1TB Hitachi external drives “Video Uploaded Soon”. They are very cheap at only $179 each on eBay. They will be connected to the main pc to backup & distribute media throughout my home. One of the 500GB drives is now in my replaytv & the other one will most likely be put in an external usb case. About two years ago I bought five old Dell Optiplex computers that came from FCCJ with monitors & keyboards for only $30 each. I decided to use one as a cheap home backup server, So I bought two 500gb Seagate drives & crammed the rest of it with all of the spare large drives I had lying around. I have 7 hard drives running in it now which gives me 1.28TB, I do use it as a movie server to my XBMC & DLP projector. It can be expanded up to 24 hard drives as I am using the two on board Ide controllers as well as Maxtor ATA 133 pci cards which add four IDE slots a piece. The DVD drive is also network shared for my slim 3110ct portege laptops that do not have DVD/CD drives. I used the 6gb drive that came with the system for the OS Boot & merged the existing drives with XP Pro’s Disk Manager. After running out of places to mount the drives “The two 500gb drives are mounted to the bottom of the case with screws” I started using the plastic shells that samsung hard disks come in, Just cutting out the plastic where the cables go. A really nice thing is the push button case which makes it easy to open up & add more storage. Maybe not very
